Annual Poster Preview

This annual event is a great way to learn about the research being conducted in Atlanta without having to travel to the Society for Neuroscience meeting. It's a wonderful opportunity for students to practice their presentations in front of a home town crowd. Food and Drinks are provided.

2012 Georgia Regional Brain Bee

The Atlanta Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience was pleased to once again sponsor the Georgia Brain Bee on February 4, 2012 at Emory University.  This year, 30 students participated, taking a written exam in the morning and progressing to an oral round after that.  In the oral round, students answered increasingly difficult questions about neuroscience and the brain.  Students were eliminated after they answered three questions incorrectly, and spelling was not considered!  The participants ranged from 9-12 grade, and were enrolled in 24 different high schools around north Georgia.  One student was a 10 year old freshman who is home-schooled, and she was among the last students to be eliminated!  During the break between the sessions, the students enjoyed a “hands on” session wherein they were able to handle a number of actual brain specimens and see examples of some experimental preparations and procedures.  This year, the Brain Bee winner was Shawn Albert of Snellville, who is a senior at The Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology.  The second place finisher was Sara Dada (junior, Wheeler High School) and third place was awarded to Karim Lakhani (sophomore, Douglas County High School).   The ACSfN will send Shawn to Baltimore, Maryland in March to compete in the National Brain Bee.  Best of luck to Shawn and congratulations to all of our impressive participants!

Brain Awareness Month

The Atlanta Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience is recruiting volunteers for our 2012 Brain Awareness campaign. Last year, we sent 78 local neuroscientists to K-12 classrooms throughout the Atlanta area to give presentations on the brain and nervous system. We reached more than 4500 students, but this year we are determined to expand our efforts. Although the Society for Neuroscience has identified March 12-18 as Brain Awareness Week, demand for classroom volunteers is so great in our area, we will be accommodating teacher requests through the end of the school year. If you would like to volunteer for a classroom visit, please sign up today at acsfn.org.
